Hill Stations Around Delhi

Since the season time is very close and all you people would like to explore the hill stations in the months of April, May and June, I thought it will be a good idea to highlight Hill Stations around Delhi. Though there a lot of Hill Stations but we will pick up Hill Stations in Uttaranchal which are in a radius of 400 kms from Delhi and fall in Uttaranchal.

Hill Stations in Uttaranchal:

1. Nainital: Nainital is one of the oldest hill stations of North India. Discovered by the British, Nainital's popularity has grown over the years and today Nainital is the famous hill station of Uttaranchal. A very good resource on Nainital Tourism will tell you everything About Nainital.
2. Naukuchiatal: Tucked in a forest, this mighty blue lake is only 25 kms from Nainital. Read everything on Naukuchiatal Blog.
3. Mukteshwar: Mukteshwar is only 60 kms from Nainital and a beautiful Hill Station. You will not find too many tourists here and the place offers magnificent views of the Himalayas.
4. Kausani: Kausani is about 100 kms from Nainital and famous for the Gandhi ashram and famous for breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Sun n Snow Inn is a beautiful hotel and comes under the boutique hotel category.
5. Ranikhet: Ranikhet is only 65 kms from Nainital and famous for its Golf Course. Its a cantonment and also famous for its Heritage Buildings. Hotel West View is a heritage hotel in Ranikhet.
6. Mussoorie: Mussoorie is also known as the Queen of Mountains. This small hill station around Delhi is very famous for its Mall Road and Kempty Falls.
7. Kanatal: Kanatal is only 50 kms from Mussoorie and is a beautiful forested Hill Station. People who want to stay away from Mussoorie's hustle and bustle, should consider Kanatal.
8. Lansdowne: Lansdowne is in fact one of the closest Hill Stations around Delhi. It is upcoming and the Chaukhamba Peak views are simply awesome from Lansdowne.

Sorry guys for not being around for quite sometime now. Thought of checking my e-mail today on in.com and saw loads of e-mails on queries related to Corbett, Nainital and Naukuchiatal. My apologies...I had absolutely no idea that some of you guys were trying to reach me...Sorry.

I am quite happy that some of you guys had the time to appreciate my work on road maps, driving directions and hotel reviews. Just when I was thinking to back out from blogging and the whole idea of consulting people to have a perfect holiday on the hills, some of you came and started it all over again :)

Ranikhet Sightseeing - Bell the Jhula Devi Temple

Nearly 700 years ago, Chaubatia in Ranikhet was a dense forest full of Wild Animals. There were numerous instances of Leopards and Tigers attacking people and taking away their livestock. People felt harassed and were also very helpless at the same time. They thus thought of praying to Ma Durga for protection. It is believed that Ma Durga appeared in a shepherd's dream and asked him to dig up a particular place where he will find an idol and she wanted a temple to be constructed at the same site.

On digging the place, the same Ma Durga idol was found and the villagers constructed the temple and also installed the same idol in the temple. Soon after the people were freed from the harassment and roamed freely in the area. But that's not over, Ma Durga appeared again in someone else's dream and asked for a "jhula" for herself. Soon the idol was then placed on a wooden Jhula and Ma Durga got her new name, "Jhula Devi".

Jhula Devi is a very sacred spot in Ranikhet and people come from far off places to worship Ma Durga. The beauty of Temple lies in thousands of bells which you would see hanging from everywhere. These countless bells are surely a a testimony to the divine and healing powers of Ma Jhula Devi.

The sight is simply awesome...Honestly I have not seen so many bells put together anywhere else. So if your wishes are fulfilled by Ma (Which I am sure will be), make sure you add one more bell to this beautiful temple.

Golf Course Around Nainital - Ranikhet

Golf is like a love affair...If its not taken seriously, its no fun and and if you do, it can break your heart.

The winding clear roads of Ranikhet bring you to this beautiful Golf Course spread on both sides of the road with amazing views of the Himalayas. In the vicinity of Trishul Peak & Nanda Devi, its probably the most beautiful gift to us by the British. Tee off at 6,000 ft. in Ranikhet and find out yourself why Golf is called the most beautiful game. The weather, surroundings and the greens blend so harmoniously in Ranikhet, no doubt the British chose this place as a Golfing Destination.

The Golf Course is maintained by the Kumaon Regiment and civilians are not permitted to play. Well if you know someone from the regiment, then obviously you could be considered :) The problem with the Golf Course is the road which divides the Course in two parts. Tourist buses, local transport are allowed to cross the Golf Course but thankfully the vehicles cant stop.

If you want to visit the Golf Course, make sure you park the vehicle and then come over. But if the game is ON, then please stay away and watch from a distance as the disgusted army officers have a habit of breaking people's head than putting :)

Ranikhet - Cantonment Around Nainital

Ranikhet - meaning "Queen's Field" is a beautiful thickly forested cantonment town only 60 kms from Nainital in Almora district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is believed that Ranikhet is named after Kumaoni Queen Padmini who fell in love with the greenery and meadows of this hill paradise. Her husband, Raja Sukhdev built her a grand palace here and named it Rani - Khet or Queens Meadow. There is absolutely no trace of this grand palace in Ranikhet but once you visit this place, you can esily believe this story.

Ranikhet is located at an altitude of 1870 meters and after so many years, it is still the same. The drive from Kathgodam is as picturesque as it must have been when the road was laid by the British. Beautiful valleys, excellent views of the Snow-clad Himalayas and thick, forested slopes of Pine and Deodhar.

Thanks to the army laws and the discipline enforced by the them, the beauty of Ranikhet is largely protected and conserved very well. Its heritage value is still high as the bunglows, churches, etc. which were built by the Britishers still exist in their original shape and beauty. The army is also very much responsible for preserving the forest of Ranikhet which truly is the real heritage of nature.

The most interesing part about Ranikhet's beauty is the way Himalayan View points are preserved. Today, crazy constructions in the hills have made it difficult to have good views of the Himalayas. While you are in Ranikhet, there are no obstructions and you get clear view of the Western Himalayas from all the points. While most of the hills are becoming a concrete jungle today, Ranikhet is busy preserving its Heritage, Beauty and Nature.

Ranikhet's vision is to emerge as the best managed, pollution free, eco friendly & green cantonment. As per me, Ranikhet is already one!!!

1. Hotel Vikram Nainital: This is arguably the only All Suite Hotel in Nainital. Situated in the VIP area of Mallital, Hotel Vikram boasts of LCD TVs in all rooms (See attached Pic).

2. The Manu Maharani: Manu Maharni hotel in Nainital is now run by DS group, the manufacturers of Rajnigandha and Baba Brand. Situated in Mallital, this is the most expensive hotel in Nainital.

3. Shervani Hilltop: The new Shervani Hotel is one of the most luxurious hotel in Nainital.

1. Earl's Court Hotel: A small heritage hotel now run by Leisure Hotels.

Boating in Nainital

Life is a boat in Nainital! The dancing waters of this beautiful lake attract a lot of tourists to explore it further in a boat. Sometimes I fail to understand why I go for boating everytime I am Nainital...But then I also know that Naini lake commands this respect.

You can hire pedal boats but then I guess its too much of a task for those who are not fit. I have seen people go deep into the lake and then struggle to come back. The better idea is to hire a row boat which comes along with a fit pahari guy who is capable of rowing it all day long.

I have not seen too many people hiring a yacht...probably not many know that one can easily hire a yacht from The Boat Club (on the mall road) for only Rs. 250 - 300. The experience is simply awesome but only two people can sit in a yacht. Recommended specially for all those honeymooners :)

Trafiic Rules in Nainital Mall

This piece of information is very important for those who are driving to Nainital.

During May, June and October, heavy vehicles are barred from 0800 hrs to 1130 hrs and 1430 hrs to 2230 hrs. Light vehicles are barred from 1800 hrs to 2200 hrs.

A toll tax of Rs. 25/- (till 1500 hrs) and Rs. 50/- (after 1500 hrs) per car has to be paid to enter Mall Road.

November to April, Light vehicles are not allowed from 1800 hrs to 2000 hrs. Hope it helps.

Weather and Climate in Nainital

Nainital, due to its location in the inner Himalayas experiences a very pleasant weather during the entire year except the winter season (December, Jaunary and February). This beautiful hill station does not experience VERY high temperatures at any time during the entire year but the winters are very cold and the the mercury takes a sudden dip.

During April - June, expect a maximum temperature of about 27 degree Celcius with the minimum temperature of about 12 - 15 degree Celcius and due to this, it gets the maximum number of tourists during this period, especially from the plain regions of Northern India.

During July and August, Nainital receives heavy rains and therefore, the climate is humid. It does rain but if you want to be in the clouds all the time, then this is the best time to go.

September, October and November are probably the best months and a perfect time to be in Nainital. The weather is very pleasant and you will not come across too many tourists at this time of the year. However, November will be slightly colder.

Nainital enjoys snowfall during the months of January and February but it remains for a shorter period of time. March is also quite cold. So all the people who have never seen snowfall, this is the closest place from Delhi. Through our blog, we will keep you updated :-)

Delhi ---> Moradabad via Hapur and Gajraula
Take right for Moradabad Bypass --->After crossing the Bypass, take LEFT U-turn for Kashipur (You dont have to go via Kashipur) ---> and after 1-2 kms the road will take compulsory right turn. ---> Follow the road for about 6 - 8 kms till you see a board indicating RIGHT for Bajpur. ---> Take Right Turn for Bajpur and then onto Kaladungi ---> In Kaladungi, you will see a left turn (just after the Indian Oil Petrol Pump which will come on your right), take that. Start Climbing up and you will hit Nainital from the back side. This is the best route and the shortest from Delhi...Only 290 kms :-)

Nainital - Not Just a Lake

Nainital, known for its idyllic beauty and a placid lake is situated at a height of 6,300 ft. in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state in India. Nainital, a 100 year old hill station, known for mountains silhouetted against the blue sky is set in a valley around the Naini Jheel. Nainital a favourite among Britishers and home to famous Jim Corbett for many years, has expanded quite a bit since then but the beauty still remains. You no longer come across bears and tigers in the surrounding forests but the walks along these forest trails are still intersting.

History: Nainital was first explored by a Sugar merchant, Mr. Barron and it soon became a popular hill station for people wanting to escape from the summer heat of the plains. It is believed that Nainital figures in the Skanda Puranas as Tririshi Sarovar and is also referred to as one of the 64 Shaktipeeths. It is also believed that eye of Sati fell here while Lord Shiva was carrying her over the Himalayas. This story probably also explains the shape of Naini Jheel which resembels an eye and why its named Nain (Eye) Tal (Lake). Quite interesting...!!!

Nainital is set in two parts - Taillital (South Point) and Mallital (North Point). Most of the good hotels are located in the VIP area of Mallital which is about 1.5 kms from the Lake/Mall. Taliital is close to a Bus Stand and hence full bustling activities. The Mall Road lies between these two points and full of tourist activities and shops popular for Imported goods.

Things to do: Boating, Dorothy Seat, Governor House, China Peak, Ropeway, Snow View and Himalaya Darshan. Nainital's strategic location, within a close range of the Himalayas, also makes it an excellent base for exploring some of the other beautiful regions in Kumaon - Ranikhet, Corbett and Almora.

Corbett River Resort

The most ordinary looking Corbett River Resort is arguably the best river side resort in Corbett. We have talked a lot about resorts by the Kosi River but this one is by the magnificent and also the backbone of Corbett, River Ramganga. Beautiful views of the valley (ghaati), extraordinary greenery, and a great waterfront give Corbett River Resort a perfect setting to be a host to wildlife enthusiasts.

Accommodation: In total, the resort boasts of 32 riverview rooms including Air Cooled Safari Tents, A/C Deluxe & Superior Rooms. The truth is that rooms are very basic but still offer an excellent view of the river and extremely spacious and comfortable. I lalso iked their Safari tents which are more or less like a room with concrete floor and attached bathroom. Please note these tents are air cooled and not air conditioned.

Service: All their guys are dressed in a jungle attire but fail to deliver best service...But they are not bad either. For the location, you can go for it.

Recreational Facilities: The resort offers a great swimming pool which offers excellent views of a bigger Pool - Ramganga. They also have Table tennis, Badminton and a Cricket kit. Ramganga is known as a fishing lodge and some people have done really with their rods in the past. You can hire fishing rods from the resort and they will also arrange a fishing permit for you. Always remember - The catch and release style :-)

Location: The resort's location is a big plus for most and negative for a few who think its far from Bijrani. Its about 25 kms from Bijrani and it takes a while for you to get to Bijrani, but then you always have an option of doing safari from the nearby gate. I honestly dont agree with that idea and believe Ramganga is one place which will give you the best feel of a jungle resort. Please note there is no cell phone connectivity at Ramganga and its not meant for those who still want to be connected to the world. Only BSNL works...And works like a typical sarkaari telecom company. So dont pin up hopes :-)

Tariff: Since the resort is marketed by Welcom Heritage (ITC), the rates are little bit on a higher side. The season rate effective October for a A/C Deluxe Room is Rs. 7,000/- per night Inclusive of all meals and taxes. Still less for the gorgeous and most beautiful river, Ramganga!

Tarangi - Rejuvenate Yourself

Tarang in hindi means wave. Tarangi in Corbett literally means waves of rejuvanation. The only Yoga & Spa resort in Corbett, Tarangi has been recently taken over by the owners of Tiger Camp. Spread over roughly 13 acres of river front land, Tarangi boasts of commanding views of River Kosi and the mountains. At Tarangi, you have a great option of reconnecting with Nature and completely unwinding yourself to the tunes of river music.

Accommodation: They have 21 A/C cottages in different categories - River view, Mountain view and Garden View. Stayed at the River View cottage and trust me you cant get closer than this. What I really liked apart from the phenomenal river view was the way these cottages allow so much of air and light to come into your room. Fitted with all modern amenities, the rooms at Tarangi are extremely delightful and built with perfection.

Service: Tarangi has employed local villagers to encourage employment in the region and I found these guys very sweet. With "Hanji" all the time on their lips, they will run around to the fullest to please you...their "Atithi".

Recreational Facilities: Promoted as a Yoga retreat, one can definitely go for some basic exercises of Yoga while at Tarangi. Since most of the people go to Corbett for not more than 3 days, its quite a refreshing experience to be doing Yoga by the river and in lap of the Himalayas. They do not have any recreational facilities but do encourage guests to display their skills and interests by organising a gardening workshop and cookery classes etc.

Location: Superior river front location in Dhikuli area.

Attractions: A nice Swimming pool with a good river and jungle view.

Tariffs: The base category starts at Rs. 5,500/- Plus Tax per night for a couple inclusive of all meals. Worth it!

Infinity Resort Corbett

If I trust Infinity's claim of being the most happening resort in Corbett, I will be sadly mistaken. Its probably one of those commercial resorts in Corbett buzzing with tourists and Corporate get togethers. If its "happening" for you, then just go for it. Well, I have come across a lot of people who want to go to a resort which is full of people...beats me but that's how they are. So if you are one of those, please look no further and go to Infinity Resort!

Accommodation: Though the rooms are river facing, they still lack appeal and cant attract anyone. Honestly the rooms at Infinity Resort are very basic for their price. They tried making the resort like an African Jungle Lodge but failed miserably. Didnt like their tiled walls inside the room. However the room was spacious and comfortable.

Service: The service was okay...Nothing great. Something that you ll get in any resort...Not a speciality here in Infinity.

Recreational Facilities: This is the only area where Infinity Resort can score some points. Liked their Swimming Pool which is quite huge in size. Also liked their activity centre where theyhave arrangements for TT, Pool, Chess, Carrom, etc. Like Corbett Hideaway they also have a Library but its not as well stocked as Hideaway but definitely shows the initiative. They also conduct a visit to the wildlife conservation centre which I feel is a great idea of educationg people about Conservation of wildlife and eco-tourism.

Location: Conveniently located in Garjia, Infinity's biggest strength is Kosi River. Located very close to Tiger Camp.

Tariff: Their published rate is Rs. 7000/- plus Tax per double room per night inclusive of all meals. That's surely on a higher side....Roughly the same as Corbett Hideaway and double of Tiger Camp. Your wish you still wanna check-in :)

Tiger Camp Corbett

Tiger Camp is arguably one of the best properties in Corbett with very reasonable package rates. Tiger Camp is situated on the banks of river Kosi amidst a lot of greenery. The newly refurbished Tiger Camp offers Air conditioned Deluxe cottages, Superior Rooms and Standard Cottages with all modern amenities that one would look out for.

Accommodation: I have to agree that Tiger Camp rooms are fabulous and I was very much impressed to see the greenery outside my room. The rooms are very spacious and come with attached bath. I stayed in the Deluxe Cottage with a small living room and kept wondering on Tiger Camp's package rates. Excellent and affordable stay!

Service: I strongly believe that Tiger Camp thrives on its service. The staff is extremely helpful and will go out of the way to make your stay memorable.

Recreational Facilities: This is one area where Tiger Camp needs to improve. Please note there is no Swimming Pool in Tiger Camp and I did not come across any recreational facility as well. They want people to enjoy nature and do the best activity in Jungle - Safari. recently heard that they are coming up with the Swimming Pool shortly. I ll let you know as soon as I hear from them :-)

Location: Tiger Camp is located on the highway in village Dhikuli about 6 kms from Bijrani Jungle Gate. Its located on the banks of river Kosi but there is no river view from the resort.

Attractions: The thatched Gol Ghar is beautiful and serves excellent food.

Tariffs: That's a major plus point of Tiger Camp. A 2 Nights package for a couple inclusive of all meals starts at Rs. 6,222/- plus Tax. That's awesome and a very low price to pay for such comfortable stay.

The Corbett Hideaway

Spread over 13 acres of river front space and within a Mango grove in Garjia, Corbett Hideaway is one of the oldest and most talked about resort in Corbett Country. Their cottages with open air sit-out area will always remind you of childhood days when you used to climb up that "aam ka ped" and pluck mangoes...And trust me the mangoes here are ripe and always in front of you ;-)

Overall Resort: Previously known as Claridges Hideaway, the resort has certainly lived upto its name. Lot of greenery, trees all around you, a nice sprawling lawn coupled with a beautiful swimming pool, open air restaurants and a bar, The Corbett Hideaway is definitely the finest in Corbett. Moreover I always felt there is some class in this resort...A resort which very well knows what they are selling and why. I loved their High Bank restaurant which is an open deck overlooking the Kosi river and full of life.

Accommodation: They have 52 cottages in total and I really liked their newly built Superior Cottages. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable.

Service: I fail to understand how their service standards are so superior than any other resort. The staff is very friendly and you are treated like a king. Their sales and service definitely works...You get more than what you are promised.

Reacreational Facilities: Library, Swimming Pool, Snooker, Table Tennis, Cricket, Badminton and Fishing.

Location: Location is obviously good...It is located on the highway, by the Kosi River and close to the Bijrani Jungle Gate...What else can you ask for?

Attractions at Corbett Hideaway:

1. Jim's Grill House: A thatched outdoor restaurant which serves mouth watering buffet meals.

2. Library: If you like reading and coffee...This is a perfect place for you. They have a very good collection of books on topics related to Tigers, Sanctuaries, etc.

3. Swimming Pool: The pool at Corbett Hideaway is absolutely fantastic...You would certainly like to take a dip.

4. Fishing: The is a small natural Mahaseer pool close to the resort where you can go and do fishing...Always remember, the catch and release style :)

Tariffs: Corbett Hideaway definitely comes for a price. But you know what...Its worth it! The base cottage starts at about Rs. 6,000/- per night with breakfast. Go for it if you can afford...Else I ll show you some lighter ones :)

Cobett Hideaway is also very famous for Corporate programs and most of the times during season its sold out. Please book in advance incase you want more than 2 units.

How to Reach Corbett

Ramnagar forms the headquarters of Corbett National Park and is easily accessible from Delhi by Road and Rail. Ramnagar is at a distance of roughly 250 kms from Delhi and even if you go easy on speed it should not take you more than 6 hours to reach the land of Tigers.

Train: Ranikhet Express

TIP: Ranikhet Express leaves Delhi around 10 p.m. and reaches Ramnagar at 5 a.m. Make sure you request the hotel for station transfers. During winters its dark at that time and you might not get a cab/taxi.

Corbett by road from Delhi:
From Delhi, take National Highway NH 24 for Moradabad via Hapur Bypass and Gajraula. Please DO NOT enter Moradabad City. Take right for Moradabad Bypass (Landmark: Hotel Best Western). Please note that Moradabad Bypass is a toll road. After crossing the Bypass, take LEFT U-turn for Kashipur and after 1-2 kms the road will take compulsory right turn. Follow the road upto Kashipur and keep going straight for Ramnagar. Once you are at Ramnagar, ask anyone for directions to your resort/hotel.

TIP: Please note that uptill Moradabad bypass the traffic situation is pretty bad. I have heard stories of people getting stuck in traffic jams for 4 - 5 hours. Garh Mukteshwar is one area that gets flooded by people during Hindu festivals and it could prove to be a nightmare if you are travelling around that time. Unfortunately, all the alternate routes are as bad. I would recommend early morning travel, leaving Delhi at about 6 a.m. in the morning OR leave late in the night. Also please do not travel in the night during the "Kaavar" period. Those guys are nasty and occupy the road more than the tyres.

Stop overs:

1. Tadka Dhaba by Bhajan at BP Gas Station in Garaula serves good Dhaba food. Open 24 hrs.

2. Meriton in Gajraula is like Haldiram of Delhi. Serves Chaat papri, Chhole Bhaturay, Sandiwiches, Indian food, etc. Open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

It is very important to understand where exactly Corbett is located and what all resort options you have. Ramnagar is the closest town from Corbett with a rail head and all the administrative offices of Corbett National Park. Bijrani Jungle Gate is easily the most popular entry gate for Jeep Safari in Corbett. Not that its the best gate and you must go from Bijrani only...Its location makes it very popular. Bijrani is roughly equidistant from Ramnagar and Dhikuli/Garjia where most of the river side resorts are located.

Dhikuli and Garjia are the two most popular villages in Corbett Country. River Kosi flows through these two areas making them a perfect place to have river side resorts. These include Corbett Hideaway, Infinity Resorts, Tiger Camp, Corbett Riverside, Tarangi, etc. Very commercial and full of tourists on almost all the weekends. Jungle Safari from Bijrani Gate

Kumeria and Mohan are two beautiful villages located roughly 15 kms from Bijrani gate. Since River Kosi flows through these areas, you will find a couple of resorts here as well. However, flow of the river in Mohan is better than Garjia and Dhikuli. Resorts in Mohan and Kumeria - Corbett Jungle Lodge, Corbett Roop Resort and Camp River. Jungle Safari from Dhangarhi and Bijrani gate.

Marchula is a sleepy vilage on the banks of River Ramganga. It is about 25 kms from Bijrani and the most beautiful place in Corbett Country. Since Ramganga is a beautiful river and much bigger than Kosi, Marchula attracts those looking for a complete jungle experience in Corbett. The place is also famous for fishing and rafting in the month of September. Not too many resort options except for one, Corbett River Resort Ramganga. But trust me this one option is much better than the rest in terms of location and true jungle experience. Jungle Safari from Dhangarhi and Bijrani Gate.

Dhela village is located in the southern perphery of Corbett Tiger Reserve and about 20 kms from Bijrani. Unfortunately, no river passes through the Dhela Village. Resorts in Dhela - Jims Jungle Retreat & Ashoka Tiger Trail. Safari from Bijrani and Jhirna gate.

Dhikala is the most popular destination in Corbett. However, the Forest authorities do not allow day safari through Dhikala gate and one can only enter the gate with a valid booking for the Dhikala Rest House/Log Huts. Unfortunately there are no private resorts in Dhikala.

Kaladungi is a beautiful hamlet about 35 kms from Ramnagar. The place is famous for endless tiger stories at the time of Jim Corbett and also the fact he chose Kaladungi as his residence which is now a Museum. The only resort option is Camp Corbett. Safari from Bijrani and Jhirna gate.

Rivers in Corbett

Water is extremely important for the survival of flora and fauna in Jim Corbett National Park. The two most important rivers in Corbett are Ramganga and Kosi.

Ramganga is the most important river in Corbett Country as it forms the most predominant hydrological resource. A typical rain water river and originating from Gairsain, the Ramganaga runs for more than 100 kms before entering the reserve near Marchula. Inside Corbett National Park, it flows till Kalagarh and then hitting the plains gathering water from rivers like Sonanadi. Ramganga is home to the famous game fish of India, Mahaseer along with other aquatic species like the endangered Gharials, crocodiles and turtles. The river also attracts a lot of migratory birds from Europe and Asia.

The Kosi still remains the most famous river in Corbett due to its presence in Dhikuli where most of the resorts exist. Kosi does not flow through the park but is still used by animals for drinking water. Kosi is known for its erratic flow and the river is highly unpredictable during the monsoons. The river is home to Mahaseer.

Sonanadi is the most important tributary of River Ramganga is responsible for watering the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and enters Corbett National Park from the North. The simple hindi translation of Sonanadi means "river of gold" and it is believed that at one time grains of gold were extracted from its bed through different treatments.

Jeep Safari in Corbett

Tiger spotting is easily the most famous activity in any wildlife tourism destination in India. With over 147 Tigers in Corbett, it is still very much dependent on your timing and luck. Infact most of the people who have done their safari (in a regualr "touristy" manner) in Corbett will not encourage you to enter the jungle. I have done both elephant and jeep safari in Corbett at least 20 times and as luck would have it, I spotted the cat more often than expected. So go for it...!!!

Jeep Safari in Corbett: The best time to go to Corbett is between Nov - April. The park main gates are open during these months and it gets really hot in Corbett after April. Morning Jeep Safari from Bijrani Gate is booked in advance and there is very little chance to enter the gate if you dont have an advance booking. All the resorts in Corbett get the safari bookings done for their guests so you dont have to worry about it. Just furnish details like Name, Age, Address, Gender supported by a valid Government ID proof to the resort and they would be happy to arrange a permit for you. Make sure you carry the supporting ID Proof while you are entering the gate. A guide is compulsory to do safari in Corbett and you also need a 4X4 vehicle. Dont worry, all this will be arranged by your resort/hotel... Service is gettin better...Aha! The evening safari which starts at about 1500 hrs is booked on first come first serve basis and the bookings are done at The Booking Centre in Ramnagar. However, I would not recommend the Evening Safari.

Costs: The rates keep changing and right now I am posting the rates that exist as of today. Will update the same during the season time :)

Compulsory Guide Charges: Rs. 200/-

TIP: Please make sure that you carry the ID card and reach the park entry gate on time. The authorities have become very strict now.

Corbett National Park

Truly, Corbett is one place where the tiger still roars...Trust me it is one hell of a place and full of remakable beauty. Infact 'Project Tiger" in India was launched/started from The Corbett National Park. The reserve is full of rich biodiversity and due to its location in foothills of Kumaon, there is abundant of flora and fauna in Corbett.

The Corbett National Park is named after Jim Corbett, a famous naturalist and is the oldest national park in India. The park when it opened was named Hailey National Park in 1936 and then it was renamed Ramganga National Park in 1954 after the famous Ramganga River in Corbett Country. It was again renamed (thankfully this time it was apt) to Corbett National Park in 1955 honoring Jim Corbett who was instrumental in creating the reserve. Over a period of time reserve area was increased and a buffer of 798 sq. kms was added to Corbett National Park in 1991. The entire Kalagarh Forest Division was part of this area from thereon.

The average altitude of Corbett National Park ranges between 1100 ft - 3400 ft above sea level and consists of number of streams, ridges and small plateaus. The weather is temperate and the teperarures vary from 5 degree celcius to 25 degree celcius in Winters and usually does not go beyond 40 degree celcius in Summers. The rainfall is quite heavy during the monsoons.

Major Flora - Sal, Khair, Sissoo, Ber, Kuthber, Bel, Chbilla, Dhak, Semal, Khingan, Kharpat, Rohini, Bakli, Pula and Bamboo.

Major Fauna - Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Cheetal , Sambar , Hog Deer, Barking Deer , Wildboar Langoor And Rhesus Monkey

There is no village inside the Corbett National Park. There are about 90 odd villages at a distance of about 2-3 kms from the boundary of the reserve and their total population is around 65,000. Also note that no highway passes through the reserve and there are no private owned resorts inside the reserve.

Eye of the Tiger!!!

And god created a cat...So that man might have the pleasure of caressing the Tiger. Alas...Man has been killing this beautiful animal. And for what??? For sport, skins and body parts. Due to this the tigers are facing major population losses and if it continues we are not very far off from that day of the extinction of our very own Royal Bengal Tiger.

Its very obvious that this priceless animal is poached to earn small money (no price is big for a Tiger) from its body parts. 1930 - 1975, thanks to the royal sport...huh...saw extinction of Caspian, Bali and Java Tigers. Its so sad to know that at the turn of century there were almost 40,000 tigers in India but not even 10% of of that figure now remain in our jungles.

It is very important for us to save tiger as it symbolizes well being of the ecosystem. In a way if you save tigers, you also save our eco system which is very crucial for man's own survival. Save the Tiger!!!

"Chhuttis" Around Delhi

Everytime I go for holidays, its like LOVE to me - I always anticipate pleasure, experience discomfort but always remember everyting with nostalgia. I do not remember how many times I have fallen in love like this...Or for how long I ll keep falling in Love for Holidays. All I can say is "I am happy in LOVE"!!! Guess that's a million dollar statement that most of the lovers will lie through their teeth for ;-)

The concept of vacations or holidays is so cool that everyone prefers an occasional day off when we get tired of the usual city life, that madding crowd and our very own "sadu" boss. Some interesting people (like me...and I am sure there are many) get these thoughts every week...We are the ones who need holiday more than anyone else in this world. No one needs a vacation so much as the person who just had one ;-)

So when people like us who are on a move literally every month (if not every week) definitely need to come together and help our friends so that they have a wonderful weekend trip from Delhi. The purpose of this blog is to create awareness and showcase different/popular/exotic weekend getaways from Delhi.

Apart from showcasing these destinations around Delhi our focus will be indepth research on the place so that it is much more meaningful. We would be happy if everyone visiting this blog could leave comments on destinations, hotels, routes, etc. which will help people know the place better.
